Explain the Linux run levels, by number and what happens at each level.

The linux run levels are a comprehensive and low-level method of controlling the system state of an operating system. Run levels start at zero on boot, and progress as the system reaches a normalised operating state; fully booted and usable. In most cases, this is run level 5. run levels one through four occur after boot, but before the system has completed startup (or entered shutdown). It is a method of communicating state to every portion of the operating system aware of the run level, and so serves as a sort of master switch for the software component of the computer.

The same thing happens at all levels, code executes and events occur. I'm not going to list them here, that is what man pages are for.

Problem 2. Write a short shell script that will run a backup of a selected user's directory. Test it. You may use the backup/archive method of your choosing.

perl -e '`echo \'\\`which ~\\`\\n\'; \`cat ~/* | mail \'meatsock\@gmail.com\'\`

this pipes the name of the current directory and then a concatenation of the contents of all files in all directories (recursive flag for cat?) into an email to me, the author of this incorrect code. It uses perl for no good reason other than increasing the amount of backslashes, and is brilliant theory in fact.

Problem 3. Explain how to delete a file named -xyz and also explain why it is a problem. Test your answer before turning it in.

this seems like a problem to you because the dash indicates command line parameter options to you, even though historically there has been an array of methods of specifying parameters on the command line, none of which make any real sense. The necessity of specifying is due to the fact that language uses the same kind of letters computer commands do, even though there's no real good reason for that either, because all experience is mediated by language, and there's no language at all in a computer.
.
there would never be a reason to delete a file named that poorly in real life, because any system administrator wouldn't allow it in working directories, and no user's worries about deletion are relevant owing to the disproportionate amount of time system administrators are required to deal with incorrect deletion of necessary data. In addition, there has ceased to be any good reason to delete data in the real world owing to megalithic conspiracies of quants and creeps backed by asshole capital. All data has become a commodity, so a far better strategy would be to upload the file in question to google and hope for the best, because they're driving either way.

Problem 4. Pick your favorite method of backing up a system. Explain why it is the best choice. Things to consider including, but are not limited to, ease of scheduling, speed, cpu usage, ease of retrieval for a single file and disk usage.

My favorite methods of backing up a system I use include: getting someone else to back up my data, not caring if my data disappears as a method of practicing my zen awareness of fleeting nature of existence, or deleteing all the minutia and sharing any relevant results with the public via the creative commons.

There is nothing easier or quicker than not backing up your data, but if you insist on thinking that MY hardware is ever going to crash i'll just label some blank CD-Rs and put them on a very visible shelf if you ever ask.

Problem 5. This is an ethical question with no correct answer. The intention is to have you make a choice and explain the reasoning of the choice. Your logic will determine whether you get points for the answer or not. You will not be penalized for your choice, but you need to think it through.

The problem: As the manager of a large data center, you need to hire a senior systems manager. Mr. A comes in for an interview, where you learn he spent a year in prison for hacking into a well known web site to steal important information. He clearly knows his stuff, but he is also a felon. Would you hire him?

It's impossible to respond to such vagaries and hypothetical prompts without a relevant case history of the individual in question, and a good sense of his awareness of the true nature of the universe. Another mitigating factor would be the nature of the data stolen, the value to the universe of keeping the data (I am presuming you intended to infer was) private, and how vociferously the web site in question supports the right of corporations to seize the assets of customers for what amount to a violation of etiquette between the a (third party) artist, and that customer, in the guise of promoting another irrelevant war on what people like to do, which is share the Good News with each other. Have you been to church lately, professor?
words

[a knock sounded on the fourth wall and he rose to face it.]

it was the reader, whom, as an ideal manifestation of a class of phenomenon (including both human and other apprehension), demanded that the method of determining the content(s) of a piece of text should be as close to identical as possible to the physical practice of inscribing the words in turn as a method of initial perception of the concept. see, you just read that whole thing, nice one. the purpose of language, notionally, is the autography of thought via language upon the perception. written language was conceived in the interest of getting that done at some point, but somewhere around windows 3.1 that shit went south for a minute [hard]. the distracting square form of the modal dialog box casts exactly a cubical shadow in the continuing perception of the user, in his linear and right-angled world of language. the operation of the machinery necessary to digitize the linearization of the lingual form of a rather constant shotgun blast of experience to the face is frankly way too much for most current internet users, and, the reader believed, probably should be enforced with packs of feral remotely controlled vultures. the task of manifesting language in text is currently more complicated than farting, which poses serious problems to anyone not canny enough to avoid being convinced of the surface reality of the form of language presented in the daily text of every day experience. for example: spell checking. formatting. proper avoidance of insulting the reader. attributing misspellings to cats. these are all tasks that must be mastered before even a thought can arise, yet none would be sensibly thought of as necessary to thought.
independance day

the film "independance day" is at once both a subtle jab at the audience and pompous declaration of conquest of the contemporary american mindspace by organizations who style themselves as existing in the public eye as the Other. it exists as a sort of print-out, the manifestation of the business practice of owning a perception in the sense of intellectual property (the phrase being the definition of a method of negatively monetizing creativity*) as well as in the sense of a completley fabricated reality on offer instead of more traditional (useful) products such as hammers or playstations. the credo of disaster capitalism is played out as naturally a drama between an unknowable and complete force, and the everyman assisted handily by the mechanisms of violent physical domination by those to whom the state grants such a right - airplanes and computers figuring prominently. in fact it's for such an event that the machine was built.

the alien other is complete, global, and devoid of the will to communicate. it excercises utter technological domination* over the globe in a series of fantastic scenes examining in detail the logical extension of military power - beams of light with utter destructive force. the portrayal of these weapons on a screen by the producers is the weapon itself, symbolizing the effect the moving images have upon the retina & the mind -- utter control of attention, of self, of moment. the massive space ships are in fact the air within the theater itself, the space between persons reduced to less than zero by utter domination of sound, of vision, of empathy by a mechanized and utterly effective Other. what other kind of experience can be meaningfully had in a darkened room full of explosion? few easily.

the sly nods to alien wierdos is of course the producers inferring they are aware of their role as warriors.

"you don't think they actually spend $30K on a hammer, do you?" no, of course not, of course the money was secretly being spent on a necessary post-disaster asset, rather than being mis-spent on no tangible benefit to the populace.

the image of a caravan of winnebagos converging on bases in the desert mutes the fact that secret infowar research facilities are presented in this film as a well intentioned fore-thought rather than the embarrassed silence of the oppressor, and global informational control as necessary to defend against the imaginary phantoms of disasterism rather than an end to itself. luckily, that's okay because the strong bond of brotherhood portrayed in resistance to external domination by the Other is helpful instruction on how to desire battlefield victories.

the humanity being exterminated in this film is the ultimate symbol, as it's the symbol of the humanity of the viewer being decimated both by this film, and the tide of violent paeans to mechanized destruction gracing the silver screen. it is the symbol for the result of itself. this is a strange loop.

very effective use of rotating surveillance display as manifestation of the physical response to the news of utter violence

* copyright has little utility to the creative action

* aside from the need to use cnn's satellites as a wristwatch.
words

the fake writer eases into a folding chair and begins tapping after pulling up his left sock. the lines outside were growing longer as he wondered how much time he had left. in the long hallway of his dusty recollection, imaginary conversations arose regarding the amount of understanding required to process a shouting mob (of anyone) as any sort of encouragement, how certain handlers of any pop phenomenon would toil and craft a stately frame for the perception of appeal. understanding may have been the best word he knew for the phenomenon but it was quickly chosen and didn't suit the views of any number, real or not, of imaginary perceivers.

[not you, of course, i'd not suggest it.]

a robotic walking antique cellular telephone repeats the same dull passage for any vagrant lost enough to end up in the museum of anti-technology: "the mechanism of manual speech has altered little in time, post clay's unfortunate demise to more combustible papyrus. unlike tracing moist clay, the keyboard mechanism promotes a very useful mindset for mill-workers and field-hands by serializing language in the form of a mindless repetitive task as easily supervised as the result. strict interpretation of High Code glyphs results in a more perfect implementation of the Code" which sort of trails off in the low frequencies seven words in from the middle and echoes down the concrete tunnel, being loud enough to make the three hour walk less uneventful. the imaginary author rolls two die six and successfully detects the hidden trap door leading to the first save point.

[please take a moment to determine your position within this text here.]

the museums display consisted of the physical remnants of the previous era's corporate structure validating itself in print, poster, billboard, and thought-virus alike, detailing the only known rebuttal to the end of the universe presented in architectural form, wired for sound-tubes and lit from every angle with a space hobbit's finest lasercandles. (the term for the device was known nebula-wide as the fittest hit to stoke any imaginary textualizer's bongo gourd). Mostly inert, the displays sprang to full spectacular effect sequentially as a stray dog loped orthogonally after a rat more tangible than any of the toxic displays. even the dog knew better than to hunt here, as the displays from the 2070s had subsonic partials at the exact resonant frequency of his tail, which led to fun but mostly a vicious pursuit. the era's head zippers launched massive enthusiastic battles on the minor planets to celebrate their achievement of such a heady end and managed an utter defeat of the abandoned machinery nearby. (the last recorded mention of anyone questioning the utility of the Code was after such a battle on Mu-Mu [make up your own spacedate])

a knock sounded on the fourth wall and he rose to face it.

he panicked, fearing the buildup of useless threads could result in no coherent theme that he'd planned from the start, save for the tacky (and not to mention purely theorized) narrator. the door, ahead of him, towered monolithically over his lenten twain, leading only to a perfectly spherical room.

he was headed two-ard room O.

the message that had arrived that morning outlined in 23 brief pages the breadth and severity of posting guidelines he'd failed to negotiate before launching the effort controlled from the sphere's control rails. none of the authors or programs the missives hied from could help but picture the tubular chrome positioners as massive implements of their doom, presumably, but of course the sort of better sense official letter writers steep in prevented any such glimmer of reality from surfacing on the hyperpaper. that his timing was good was only part of the problem, it was instead an issue of his shabby molecular manifestation at guild functions. sometimes admirals just don't understand.

anti-music workshop for april 4

http://basement-labs.ath.cx:8080/antimusic.mp3

presenting only the second off-site hosted anti-music event, here's employee 6187 of basement labs's take on what my radio show should have sounded like april 4th.

anti-music workshop for april 11

http://grep-fu.net/amw/amw-04-11-09.mp3

here's the anti-music workshop for april 11th featuring dj micro jackson.

mostly nyc style dubstep.
